Linlithgow Reds 2s  43 – 5  Hamilton Bulls 2s

The Reds 2s welcomed a strong Hamilton Bulls 2s to Lower Mains Park on a fine dry and sunny afternoon. Last season’s 2nd team player of the season, Cammy Murrie, captained the side at scrum half and with Aidan Rennison stepping in at 10 and veteran Ross Martin leading the pack at No.8, the Reds 2s showed a sense of purpose right from the off. Indeed the home side were ahead with less than a minute played – Hamilton failing to clear from receiving the opening kick off and full back Will Turpie sliced through the visitors’ defence after slick hands from the Reds’ backs. Cammy Murrie converted from in front of the posts and the Reds 2s had 7 points on the board as the time registered one minute played.

The two teams were evenly matched for the next 24 minutes, with no scoring, until the home side ran in a further 4 tries before the interval. First up was Adam Scott, who exploited a loose tap down from a line-out close to the Hamilton line (12-0), then not long after the restart, Cammy Murrie, who was leading the team superbly, spotted a gap in the visitors’ defence and sent a long kick down the field from near his own 22. Will Turpie, who was live to the opportunity, needed no second invitation to showcase his pace, beating the full back to the ball, swerving round his despairing attempted tackle before running in from halfway for a fine try, converted by the instigator of the move, Cammy Murrie.

Three minutes later and it was back row Kai Hunter who burst through the Hamilton defence with a powerful from over 40 metres out. With no kicking tee forthcoming (3 Reds’ subs were still recovering the ball from the previous conversion which had ended up in the undergrowth of the railway embankment), Freddie Adcock stepped up to slot a drop-kick conversion to make the score 26-0.

A few minutes later and another break-out from deep, this time from Ross Martin, saw the ball moved out quickly from the breakdown to full back, Will Turpie, still in his own half. Again showing great pace he ignored the speedy Alex Hall outside him, stepping inside then outside defenders to cross for his third try – a fine first half hat-trick.

Hamilton finally got on the board early in the second half (31-5), only for Aidan Rennison to get on the scoresheet, stepping silkily through the visitors’ defence for a try which Freddie Adcock converted (38-5). 

The remainder of the match was evenly matched and it wasn’t for another 35 minutes, as the game moved towards full-time that there was any more scoring – Alex Hall rounding off a fine Reds 2s team performance with a try following a tap penalty on the Hamilton 5 metre line.

Comment

An excellent team win with fine performances from veterans and youngsters alike. The on-the-field leadership from captain Cammy Murrie helped the younger players find their feet and everyone contributed to the fine win.

Hamilton were no mugs and, while they matched the Reds for much of the game, they couldn’t handle the Reds’ superb finishing.

Special shout-outs to Will Turpie for his superb first half hat-trick and to Freddie Adcock, who’s presence in the midfield was highly effective in both attack and defence.
