An outstanding success – that was the general feedback on the third annual RedsFest 7s Tournament and Beer Festival.

As President Jean McKeown says “What a fantastic day at the club last Saturday with the both the rugby 7s tournament and the RedsFest beer Festival.

It was amazing to see so many people there, enjoying the different ales and cider on offer and seeing people catching up with old friends on the day.

The Beer festival wouldn’t be the same without our organising team, sponsors, volunteers and most of all all the visitors! A big thank you to all for making is such a wonderful day.

The whole purpose of RedsFest is to raise funds for the club. These funds go to help support the various developments in the club, from projects around our facilities to supporting developments on the grounds and as ever to enable us to offer rugby to the local community.

Thank you and hope to see you all next year!”

The introduction of a Women’s 7s tournament this year was a huge step forward and brought an extra dimension to a great day. Congratulations to all 14 teams (8 men’s and 6 women’s) who entertained with some thrilling rugby over the course of the afternoon. Big shout-out too to our tournament referees (pictured below) who presided over a total of 25 ties!

Edinburgh University Reds came out top of the women’s tournament to be the first ever winners of the Palace Cup with one of their players, Rowan McPherson, being selected as Player of the Tournament. Grangemouth gave them a good game in the final, but the Reds’ overall teamwork, pace and skill proved too much for them in the end.

In the men’s tournament, Linlithgow Reds and the Misfits emerged first and second from Pool A, but Pool B had to be decided on points difference, after three teams – Murrayfield Wanderers, Stoneyhill Supers and Edinburgh Accies – finished level all with 2 wins from 3 games, the latter two claiming the qualification slots. Murrayfield Wanderers went on to defeat GHK Rugby to retain the Plate Trophy, while in the main competition the Linlithgow Reds and Edinburgh Accies both won their respective semi-finals to progress to the final.

Accies had played some robust and skilful rugby throughout the day, but faded in the final as the Linlithgow Reds continued to play some cracking 7s rugby, never letting their opponents settle and showing great skill and pace in attack. Former Red, Ally Wood, now an Accies stalwart commented that his Accies’ team, largely based on physical forwards, couldn’t contain the pace and enthusiasm of the younger Reds team, which was made up of largely fit and pacy backs.

The Reds were outstanding in all 5 matches they played over the course of the afternoon and deservedly retained the RedsFest Mains Park Trophy. Alex Hall claimed the Tournament MVP award, but it could easily have gone to any of the Reds on the day – all were outstanding!
