Wee Reds have great Mothers’ Day out at Currie Festival!

All 4 Wee Reds Mini squads were at the Currie Festival last Sunday and all made their mothers proud! Here are some reports:

With no game over the past couple of weeks, the P5’s have been working very hard at training with the coaches on tackling and their defensive lines. This was clearly evident on Sunday when they came away from a 6-team tournament at Currie undefeated and with the Grand Slam!

On a tight pitch, it was the defensive efforts from the full team all the way through from the first game against Currie Yellows to the last game against Perthshire that won them match after match. Each opposition would keep trying different approaches, but their frustration was clear to see, as they simply couldn’t get through The Red wall time after time, often having to hand the ball over after 6 tackles. Leading the defensive line all day were Patrick, Julen, Harry, Rory and Gregor.

When the boys did have the ball, great handling was on show to use ‘2 quick passes’ to move into space, to allow Angus, Olly, Brodie and Zac to finish off some brilliant team and individual tries.

Highlight of the day for sure was Anthony’s cheeky short kick off against Boroughmuir, which allowed The Reds to get the ball back straight away.

A special mention also goes to Zac who showed some great skills on his Red’s debut, including some outrageous dummies to help skip past plenty of defenders.

As everyone slowly drifted home, the focus turned to next Friday’s big night out! Lets hope Edinburgh put on a similar performance to the P5s!

Final Results:

Win vs Currie Yellows: 10 – 5
Win vs Currie Blacks: 8 – 0
Win vs Boroughmuir Greens 9 – 6
Win vs Biggar 8 – 0
Win vs Boroughmuir Yellows 8 – 4
Win vs Perthshire 8 – 5

Mothering Sunday brought much confusion over whether clocks had automatically changed overnight (hint: the one on the oven is still wrong, but if you wait another 6 months, it’ll be fine), but it also brought a day of brilliant sunshine and brilliant rugby!

The Wee Reds P6s travelled to Currie for a festival including Boroughmuir, Currie (obviously), Dunfermline, Biggar and Boroughmuir (again). The crowd were once again bolstered by a herd of rugby mad horses – some of our most dedicated fans it seems.

Games came think and fast, with 4 played in quick succession. The boys showed no ill effects from being down an hour’s sleep, with committed tackling and determined running from the first whistle. Some excellent team moves and an effective kicking game kept the Wee Reds within touching distance of Boroughmuir and Currie in the first two games. Dunfermline proved a tougher test on a pitch that hadn’t had the memo about the arrival of spring. And then, it all came together as the boys grew into the game against Biggar and came away worthy winners. A welcome break gave the team a chance to get some fuel on board and work on handling with the aid of mini eggs. A final match against  Boroughmuir 2 (or should that be Borough _more_?) brought the curtain down on a great day of rugby.

Thanks to Currie for hosting – well done P6!

Linlithgow P4s hit the 4G pitches at Currie on Mother’s Day in full sunshine and at full speed! We had a bumper morning of 5 games so all the players got plenty of action.

This was the first time they had played a tournament on this surface instead of grass but it certainly didn’t put them off and it led to some very fast paced games. Overall the Reds were pretty evenly matched with the other teams and there were so many tries & tackles on both sides that we were hard pushed to say who won, so we’ll claim victory.

The squad have been working herd on popping the pass before going down or being tackled and this work really showed on Sunday! Witj quick offloads to their team mates keeping game play going preventing the 6 tackle rule applying.

Aethan was full of determination finding gaps with an eye on the try line at all times. Duncan was a tackling machine – on several occasions getting straight up from taking one player down to take down another. Casper likewise was fearless as ever always looking for the next tackle. Finn loved the Astro and scored a few times including one after running the full length of the pitch. Full respect to Magnus for coming back on and giving it his all after taking a ferocious tackle early on. Ruy continued to surprise us- he is often on the wing but when he decides to tackle, he always takes down his opponent.

We saw Toby again read the pitch and find the gaps or make his own with his quick feet. Serge was making tackles in the centre of it all and scored tries too. Brodie as ever was equally getting stuck in with tackles and ducking & diving to score tries. Ryan was very keen to get involved as always & with his natural game positioning we see him as a future fullback. Reading the game & watching the opposition closely as always allowed Brinley to score lots of tries. Our newest member George was not shy to get involved and made lots of great tackles all the more impressive as he’s only been playing rugby since January.

All round a wonderful day out and the boys should be as proud of them as we are. Thanks to Currie for hosting such a sunny tournament and a special thank you to Neil for such fantastic photos  as always.
